In 1974 the Friends Service Committee and other peace groups established a national campaign against the bomber. After much lobbying their efforts bore fruit. In 1977 Jimmy Carter, a candidate for the Democratic presidential nomination, announced his opposition to the new bomber, and several months after taking office, canceled its production. However, under president Reagan the bomber was again resurrected in 1982. -LMC]
