This is the "rooting section" and to sit there you were supposed to wear a white shirt, blouse or sweater. (White made a good background for the card stunts that the rooting section performed at half time.) The center section (which this appears to be, where the California banner was flown) was known as the "men's rooting section," hence all the men. There were smaller sections on either side, "mixed, or married couples" section was immediately to the north of the men's section. To the south of the men's section was the "women's section." The gender separation of the sections seemed to be honored, except at half time when women and married individuals inflitrated the men's section to make sure that every seat was filled to make the card stunts work properly. (Different colored cards were under the seats in the men's section; cheer leaders would call out the stunt number, and the students would hold up the appropriately colored card at their seat.) In terms of today, each card acted as a pixel. If people had sunglasses they wore them, because the Cal rooting section faces West. It's also interesting to note that although Bermuda shorts were worn by women students from time to time, the women in this image chose to wear a skirt.
