Content description:
Photo shows political protest by members of the Ad Hoc Committee. A large group of demonstrators are gathered in front of the Oakland Tribune building. They are all facing the same direction as they listen to a speaker, Walter Batchelor, who is standing in the foreground of the photo. Some of the protesters are holding large signs. On the far edge of the crowd (left-hand side of photograph) are a number of police officers. Some of the subjects in the photo have been identified - their names written in blue ink on the front of the photograph. The names are: Walter Batchelor, Ann Bancroft, Lowell Young (SF), Gordon Tousley, Jim Forsyth, Hilbert Coleman, Jr., Harold Supriano, Robert Eden, Mike Friedman, Sol Mandel, and Sunny Ferber. No date is printed on the photo. In 1964 the Ad Hoc Committee to End Discrimination organized a number of demonstrations to protest racial discrimination in hiring procedures, including protests against Sheraton-Palace, Auto Row, Mel's Drive-in, and the Oakland Tribune. The Ad Hoc Committee picketed The Tribune building after William F. Knowland, editor and general manager of The Tribune, rejected hiring demands of the Ad Hoc Committee. The Ad Hoc Committee charged that the percentage of minority racial group employment is inadequate, and demanded that minority racial group employment on The Tribune be increased to between 15 and 20 percent of the total employment by Decmeber 15, 1964.
