An aerial view of old Highway 40 between Rodeo and the Carquinez Bridge extends straight as an arrow from bottom center, until it makes a bend to the right just before crossing the Sacramento River at the top. Well before it crosses the river, it passes through a field of oil refinery tanks on both sides. At left center a new housing subdivision appears. A Tribune clipping, dated Sept. 6, 1958, on the back reads "WAITING FOR THE BRIDGE Paving the last link of the Highway 40 freeway from El Cerrito to Crockett--the stretch north from Rodeo to the Carquinez Bridge--is due to be completed October 15. But this highway, built through the largest excavation ever made for a road, won't be opened until the parallel bridge is completed, perhaps by Dec. 1, engineers say.
