The Tribune Clipping, dated July 1, 1959, on the back of this photo reads " NEW FREEWAY LOOK Highway crews are creating a mammoth auto-age landscape at Walnut Creek with the six-bridge three-level interchange at the entrance to the Walnut Creek bypass freeway. The 4.5 miles freeway, which will divert traffic around Walnut Creek north to Concord and south to Danville, is scheduled to be completed late this year. The three-legged interchange, one of the largest in the state, will funnel vehicles off Mt. Diablo Blvd." The highway from Oakland [now Highway 24] at right center joins in with the highway [now Interstate 680] from Concord to Danville at the left lower quadrant. The yet-unconnected bridges and ramps are visbile throughout the construction area. The district identified in the photo as "Saranap" is in the upper right quadrant, along with a few residual orchards.
