The inscription on the back of this photo reads "Mrs. Louise Marvin['s] Beauty shop on Washington near 14th about 1904." Two Tribune clippings are affixed to the back also: the first, dated May 6, 1952 reads "This photograph is identified as the interior of Mrs. Louise Marvin's Beauty Shop on Washington Street near 14th Street. It was believed taken sometime in the year 1904." The second, dated Nov. 24. 1957, reads "Not a hair dryer in sight, but it's a beauty shop just the same. The old photo is identified by an Oakland old-timer as the interior of Mrs. Louise Marvin's Beauty Shop on Washington Street near 14th. The archaic light fixture and the just as archaic hats the ladies are sporting help to place the age of the picture--taken some time in the year 1904." The photo itself shows four elegantly attired women, all wearing extravagant hats, in front of display cases on each side of a narrow store. Two clerks are behind the counters on each side. The store also has narrow balconys on each side. A man in frock coast, possibly the manager, is near the back of the store. The diplay cases carry combs and other objects for hair care.
