A crowd of people, two of whom are holding a large sign up, are waiting for the ship on the dock. Two tug boats are moving around the ship, manuevering her into place. (from U.S. Navy's official web site) The USS Enterprise, sometimes referred to as the "Big E", is the 8th ship with this name. It was commissioned in September 1960 and was the first nuclear powered aircraft carrier. Her maiden voyage was in 1962. She participated in the naval blockade of Cuba as ordered by President John F. Kennedy in 1962. Transferred to the WESTPAC (Pacific fleet) in November 1965, home port became Alameda Naval Air Station. Completed six combat deployments to Southeast Asia between 1965-1972 and became the first nuclear-powered ship to engage in combat when it launched planes to bomb North Vietnam in December 1965. In 1973, the "Big E" returned to the east coast for refitting of its deck to support the new F-14 Tomcat fighter planes. Returned to WESTPAC in September 1974 becoming the first carrier to deploy F-14 Tomcats. The carrier participated in the evacuation of Saigon in 1975. During the next 15 years, the carrier completed several tours of the Pacific. In March 1990 the Enterprise's home port was shifted from Alameda to Norfolk, VA. In October of 1990 she went into drydock for refueling and the Navy's most complext overhaul ever attempted. This was completed in September 1994. The Enterprise is currently (as of Fall 1998) on deployment to the Mediteranean Sea and Arabian Gulf.
