Mixed media sculpture. Top piece has white painted text reading "He Thought It Was the End of the World / BDT" on one side and painted spiral designs in red and gold with multimedia elements including mirror, metal, and painted wood on the other. "David Risling, Sr., once told Brian Tripp a story about hydraulic mining in Northwest California in the area of a traditional Karuk village. He described miners blasting down the hillside in search of gold, destroying the village site and unearthing the burial ground. Karuk people witnessing the event cried as they watched and tried to gather their ancestors' bones being washed down river. Risling said they thought it was the end of the world." Carey T. Caldwell, Chief Curator, History.
