The Tribune clipping, dated September 21, 1957, attached to the back of the photo reads "WORK IN PROGESS-Cosntruction on the Walnut Creek bypass highway makes an arrow head point toward Oakland [left]. The upper road will connect with the new Concord freeway [upper right] , while the lower will serve Danville and southern Alameda County. Project will be finished in 1959." Downtown Walnut Creek is in a pocket formed by what is now Interstate 680, north and south of the interchange. The road to Oakland is now known as Hiway 24. The Walnut Creek bypass is designed to divert commute traffic off downtwon streets to Interstate 680 and Hiway 24.
