An aerial view of the Carquinez Bridge over the Sacramento River, looking south from Vallejo. At the time the photo was made, there was only one span over the Sacramento River, but construction cranes are in evidence preparing the piers for a second span. Two ships are in the scene: the Golden Bear maritime training ship is docked west of the bridge on the Vallejo side, and a cargo ship [naval?]is in midstream east of the bridge. Crockett in on the far side, east of the bridge, with the C & H sugar refinery visible. Three roads on the south side are marked: One is Highway 40 leading to Richmond, another leads from highway 40 to Martinez via Franklin Canyon Rd., and the third one is the route of a yet-to-be constructed road between Crockett and Franklin Canyon Rd. The Tribune clipping, dated June 14, 1956, reads "HIGHWAYs TO CROCKETT While the State is pushing construction of the Highway 40 Freeqy between Crockett and Richmond, Contra Costa County is building a highjway of its own (left) to provide a shorter, faster connection between Crockett and the Franklin Canyon Highway.
