Drawing is a form of continuing magic that human beings have always practiced. I remember watching my father copying Krazy Kat cartoons when I was a child, and thinking it was magic the way a line appeared and made an image. Artists talk about a drawing or painting having life in it, and if you can get that, the drawing can stand in for the real thing. When I draw, I go at it in a curious exasperated mood - it seems to come out better that way than if I tried to think about it. But I'm not exasperated with the subject. If I pick out something to draw or paint it's always something I like. I like the way a still life, or a landscape, or the body looks. I just love it. I also love art. I even love art I don't like. Just say that I'm a diehard."
