Photograph. Date: Late 19th century. Description: Colonel and Mrs. Edwards and their children in front of observatory, Oakland. (D. Curry, 4/30/02) Photos shows the Edwards family posing on the steps of the observatory on the Harmon estate. On the back of the photo, written in pencil "Col. Edwards; Marietta Edwards, Harmon Edwards, Mrs. Edwards (nee Harmon), George Edwards. Harmon home, next to College of the Holy Names, Oak. 1880." All three of the children are well dressed and probably under the age of 6 as the youngest boy is still in a "dress" while his older brother is in short pants. The youngest boy is holding his father's walking stick in his hands. According to the donor file, the Harmon house stood at the corner of Grand Ave. and Harrison St. built by A.K.P Harmon founder of Harmon Gym on the UC Berkeley campus. His daughter, Etta, married Col. Edwards, who was a member of the first graduating class of UC Berkeley, in 1878. Edwards Field was named after him. Mrs. Edwards wedding dress is also in the collection.
