The newspaper clipping attached to the back has the caption "Scholarship Donor - Mrs. Laura Whipple has established scholarship fund at Washington High School" and is stamped "TR D MAY 17 1956." Part of the article is also attached; "Fremont, May 17 - A fund raised during World War I to purchase an ambulance has been converted into the "Laura Thane Whipple Scholarship," honoring one of Fremont's best known civic leaders. The award of $150 will be given to a Washington High School student on June 17 during graduation exercises. The winner will be selected on the basis of citizenship, leadership, scholarship and need. Mrs. Whipple started the fund in 1917 to send an ambulance to overseas troops. When the war ended before the plan was carried out, the fund was held inactive on the high school books. Selecting the first-year scholarship winner will be School Supt. J.V. Goold, Principal Irving Hird, Asst.
